When I got ready to go out into the snow yesterday morning I opened my door to find my boots I left dying in the hallway and found a treat tucked into the right shoe, a pomander!
Pomanders, according to Merriam-Webster, date back to the 15th century and are "1: a mixture of aromatic substances enclosed in a perforated bag or box and used to scent clothes and linens or formerly carried as a guard against infection ; also : a clove-studded orange or apple used for the same purposes."
Now the only reason I knew what this prickly looking orange was or what it was called was that I had just read instructions on how to make one earlier this week on Apartment Therapy (if you haven't spent hours poring over this site, do it now. You won't be disappointed). I had even been thinking of where to buy the supplies to make such a gift. Because my neighbor is equally obsessed with the site I assumed it was her, but she said she didn't even know the word pomander.
So, now I am left with this deliciously spicy smelling gift and the magical feeling of this truly special season spent in Inwood. Thank you to my secret Santa.
