After more than 20 trees were cut down in Inwood Hill Park, this after last year's instances of arborcide (at around this time as well), the Parks Department is now offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the culprit. The reward is $2,000.
New York 1 spoke to Parks Commissioners Adrian Benepe and took a look at the situation in Inwood. New York City takes a pretty tough stance against arborcide, resulting in jail time and fines up to $25,000.
The following is a note from Jennifer Hoppa, Northern Manhattan Parks Administrator.
Hi all,
We've unfortunately had another major incident of arborcide in Inwood Hill Park.
On or around Saturay February 21st, two Tulip Trees and fifteen Pines, Sugar Maples and Hackberries were cut down in Inwood Hill Park in the southeastern quadrant of the park.
It looks like an axe was used for the tulips and a machete for the other species.
We've requested increased Ranger and Park Enforcement Patrols in the park and are asking everyone in the community to provide any known information related to the incident.
We are offering a $2000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction. People can call the 34th Precinct at 212.927.0822 with information.
Many thanks for your assistance in helping protect Manhattan's last swath of native forest from further destruction.
-Jennifer
