New Gym Opens on Dyckman Street in Inwood

Inwood's long-awaited Planet Fitness opens its doors today and is running a recession-friendly monthly membership of $10 a month. The new gym is situated on the corner of Dyckman Street and Vermilyea, an improvement over the  vacant construction site that has been on that corner for many years. 

Although some Inwoodites already belong to the gym's other nearby location in Marble Hill (or Kingsbridge? Still not sure what to call the area east of Broadway near Target), many are excited about having a place to workout a bit closer to home. A discussion is already underway about the cleanliness, culture and possibiilities for fitness at Planet Fitness in general.

 Now that the doors are open, let the debate begin!

Champion Clothing Photo Shoot in Inwood Hill Park

Champion clothing is shooting an ad campaign in Inwood Hill Park today. According to Martin Collins, community liaison for Assembly Member Adriano Espaillat, the permit runs until 8 p.m.

215th Stepstreet Cleanup This Sunday

Martin Collins, your friendly neighborhood activist/Espaillat administration member/graffiti remover/fill-in-the-superlative is hosting his yearly CLean up the 215th Street Steps event on Sunday. I worked on the steps with Martin the year before last and a. felt great cleaning up the neighborhood, b. got a great workout, and c. met lots of wonderful neighbors.

Wear your work pants, bring some gloves and a can-do attitude and get those steps ready for spring!

215th Street Steps Spring Clean-up


Join your neighbors this Sunday, March 15 from 12:00-2:30pm for the 215th Street Steps Spring Clean-up. Meet at 12:00pm sharp on 215th Street & Park Terrace East.

Please bring a pair of work gloves. We’ll remove the litter and graffiti from the steps and adjacent properties from PTE to Broadway, including the hill north of the steps. Refreshments will be provided.

Calling All Washington Heights Yoginis: Get Your Yoga on at New Studio

The Heights in getting a new yoga studio this month. According to InwoodKids, owner Alyssa Snow says that MindBodySoul Yoga Studio is slated to open its doors on Fort Washington Avenue and 170th Street on March 17, and will be offering group and private yoga classes as well as acupuncture services. 

The studio is offering a discounted introductory package and discount for student and hospital employees. Classes include kundalini, vinyasa, hatha and kids yoga on Saturdays. Alyssa says she will be open to Mommy and Me classes during the week if there is interest.
